Noel Legrand – Windmills of your Mind (Solo Piano)
One of my favourite nostalgic childhood songs, I found this version in an old book that’s been with me since I was young. Simply chords accompany a monophonic melody line. Grade 2-ish.
Janette Mason + James Alexander Thompson – Holy Isle
A gentle, ambient soundscape. Introduces some basic tenth shapes and a meditative 2 note melody. Great relaxing piece for Grade 1 students.
Ola Gjielo – Still
From the Ola Gjielo album – Night. An incredibly serene piece, with the feeling of a late night improvisation. Harmonically very simple, the only real challenge here is mastering the triadic tenths in the left hand. Voicing this requires a certain degree of finger independence in the right hand, in order to keep the bell like tolling of the inner voice stable and distinct from the right hand chords. Grade 3 for adults, kids will struggle simply due to hand size.
Naoko Ikeda – Moon Flute
A haunting, well-crafted miniature from the book Naoko Ikeda – Graded Collection 2-5. Challenges include legato thirds in one hand, chromatic triad movement, and an inner section based on a moderately fast left hand patter relying heavily on fingers 4 and 5.
